Start with the same model year and the powertrain you want. A gas RAV4 and a CR-V Hybrid are not a like-for-like comparison, even at the same advertised price. There is no single winner for every budget or every used vehicle's condition.

Compare the exact year, engine and drive system in the EPA side-by-side tool. Use your mileage and fuel prices; do not apply a model's best MPG figure to every trim or assume a hybrid's higher price will pay for itself.
Test both with your child seats and the cargo you carry. Compare loading height, rear-door access, passenger comfort and parking visibility in person. Equipment and space needs cannot be settled by a trim badge alone.
